Ryo Tomoda (Tomoryo)
Born and raised in Osaka, Japan, now lives in Kamakura, Kanagawa.
Classically trained in both ink and color painting for two years and
influenced by classical paintings from Muromachi to Edo era (15 to 19th century),
I employ that style and technique, using traditional media such as sumi ink, mineral paint, seashell chalk, rice paper, and silk sheet, but with a contemporary twist.
Equally inspired by Zen Buddhism and old school Hip Hop, as well as science in the fields of relativity, quantum mechanics, and ecosystem, I try to express these themes with a sense of space (by dissecting the surface with figures) and time (by speeds of brushstrokes and impression of movement in each figure).
